20 Then the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God, ‘Why do you break the commandments of the Lord, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.’” 21 But they conspired against him, and by command of the king they stoned him with stones in the court of the house of the Lord.
Those who lose their lives for God’s sake will be given great reward. To be able to declare God’s words in a world where people are deaf of it, one must be possessing courage just like Zechariah. If during Zachariah’s time he wasn’t afraid to reveal the truth even though the consequence of it was his death, still he chose to face the people and declare that what they were doing was not pleasing in the eyes of God. We can do it too in our time. We can share God’s goodness and expose wickedness. We shouldn’t be afraid to think of what other people might be saying. Some could possibly mock us but what is important is we are pleasing God and that is all that matters.
Notice the verses. It says the consequence of breaking God’s commandments is not being prosperous. If we want prosperity then we should obey God as simple as that. But we should obey not to be blessed, not to expect for a reward but mainly because we love God and we want to please Him in every way.
