Oholah and Oholibah (Ezekiel 23:48-49)

48 “So I will put an end to lewdness in the land, that all women may take warning and not imitate you. 49 You will suffer the penalty for your lewdness and bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.”

Oholah and Oholibah, familiar with these two? In the book of Ezekiel, God named these two as women, daughters of a mother, who played whore in Egypt. They became God’s, they bore sons and daughters. As for their name, Oholah is Samaria and Oholibah is Jerusalem.

Whoring like Oholah and Oholibah did is compared to having idols aside from God. For we were created to worship the one and only God, we are to be faithful to him and Him alone. It pains God to see us giving most of our time to other things or person when in fact we are taking Him for granted. Now, are we serving other idols? If that is the case then we are whoring like Oholah and Oholibah. Sounds not so good, right? Not only does it sound not so good, it does not feel good as well. Be in God’s shoes. Imagine your partner, husband or wife, having an affair with another person. That hurts so much, right? Now we know.

And God said, “…you shall bear the penalty for your sinful idolatry and you shall know that I am the Lord God.” It is not too late yet to turn our backs from sinful idolatry. God maybe slow to anger but when provoked no one could beat His ferocity. Do not wait for God to divide the land literally just like what He did during Moses’ time. It is time for us to be faithful to Him and stop whoring.
